It’s amazing how challenging it can be trying to reinvent your business in a quickly changing life.  I face many of the same challenges that others face as they try to grow a business.  Mine has been part time for a long time since I’ve depended on my day job (federal employee doing multi-media) to provide for my family, especially in today’s economy.  Trying to combine a full time job with a part time business, and learning to be a new parent definitely doesn’t leave much room to breath.  I’ll admit that with these challenges, I’ve occasionally question whether or not it’s worth the sacrifice of my family to continue trying to grow a business that I hardly have time to work on.  But then I’m reminded that it’s because of my love for both my family and my photography business that I continue on.  Both are extremely rewarding, but never doubt that I’d always choose my family first if it ever came down to it.

In a recent post I talked about how we were discontinuing our wedding services.  This is all part of the reinventing in order to better accommodate our new life with Zachariah, as well as aiming to bring something new to this industry.  Though it’s very exhausting, it’s also very exciting.  I get new ideas that I’m eager to try, but I’m not sure where to put them on the calendar.  I just can’t do things fast enough to keep up with myself.  Aside from photo ideas, I am constantly realizing all of the business things I have to work into my new business model such as policies, products, marketing, and so on.  It really is fun and exciting, and overwhelming, and frequently detoured by a cute little one year old.  He’s really hard to resist.

I know I’m not the only parent/small business owner to experience these exciting challenges.  For others experiencing the same thing, I encourage you to focus on what you love and make sure that you truly are pursuing the right things in life.  My dad owned his own business, and I’ve been trying to have my own businesses since I was a kid.  I even created my own cookie recipes in high school and sold cookies to my peers, labeling myself the Cookie Man.  So this life is designed into who I am, and photography is a business is which I can give back to others while supporting my family at the same time.  But your story may be different.  It’s tons of fun taking pictures and creating images, but not everyone has to be a business photographer to do it.  To do so means you also have to be a business expert more than you have to be a photographer.  If you’re brave enough for that journey, then cool beans.  You’ll spend the rest of your life working on it like the rest of us.  It’s not easy and I can’t tell you how much I wish I could drop everything and go full time today, but I know I have too much work to do on the business side of things first.  Eventually I will, and at which point we’re hoping to move to Tennessee at the same time.  I love my family and my business, and I look to God for help with both because I really don’t feel like I have the time for anything anymore.  But the rewards are worth it all to me.  Best of luck to the rest of you.

So we finally were able to kind of do our first photo party.  This one was a birthday celebration for miss Tarnisha as she forever preserves her twenties with her family and close friends.  I’ll admit that I was excited when she contacted me about this.  Especially when she mentioned a cake fight.  Who isn’t up for a cake fight?  So we did some coordinating, and I specifically purchased this new, hand painted, backdrop to be used for this party.  It was tons of fun, and I look forward to doing more photo parties.  If anyone is interested, let me know.  In the meantime, check out the slideshow we put together for Tarnisha below.
